Thumper Ain’t No Flow Game
Since Arcadian Rhythms shuttered its doors toward the beginning of the year I’ve not written about games aside from informal comments and emails here and there. That changed with last month’s release of Thumper, a ‘rhythm violence’ game that combined musical rhythm action concepts with intense stylised visuals and a soundtrack courtesy of world-leading noise rock outfit Lightning Bolt.
Joel at Electron Dance was kind enough to publish the resulting essay and offer some editorial guidance, an experience I’d missed more than I realised since Martin Petto stepped down as Vector editor. I should also thank Jonathan Blow for tweeting some comments with which I disagreed. Unpicking that disagreement helped crystallise what I think is most laudable about Thumper‘s design.
