The Fucking Cops – Fuck You Up With Some Truth EP

The Fucking Cops - Fuck You Up With Some TruthFrom a name like The Fucked Cops you might expect a DIY hardcore punk ragefest, particularly when they release an EP under the name Fuck You Up With Some Truth. It’s very ‘speak truth to power’, huh?

In fact what you get is a collection of melodic, hooky pop-punk and a bundle of contributions from various luminaries of the US punk scene. Songs like ‘Sweating or Freezing’ feature guest vocals from Ian Graham of Cheap Girls (and, perhaps in tribute to this contribution, a guitar solo that sounds like its straight off one of his own songs), and vinyl copies of the record reportedly feature artwork from Jason Lubrano (Iron Chic), Lauren Denitzio (ex-The Measure [SA]), John G (Cleveland artist), Abestos Breath (Ohio artist) and Shannon Sullivan (of The Fucking Cops themselves). I didn’t get a chance to peruse any of this and of the give I’ve only seen Lauren’s art and design work, but it’s a cool package and the band are evidently pretty well-connected.

The six songs present are universally upbeat or, at least, live up to the “sing sad songs happily” approach that characterises so much music on the broad border between power pop and punk rock. ‘For Whom the Taco Bell Tows’ kind of sums this up: “I’m still an idiot but I feel magnificent”. Terrible title, cool song. There’s also the obligatory song about touring, the restrained ‘Sweating or Freezing’, which exhibits more down-to-earth lyrical panache with lines like “forgetting what it feels like not to be in motion”.

There’s also a thematic loop with first song ‘Gloria’ exploring the after-effects of being dumped (apparently getting pissed outside a booze shop is the Midwest method of dealing with this) and ‘Gloria Pt. II’ closing out the EP and offering a different perspective on the same sense of loss: it’s slower, more overtly sad but still more upbeat, noting that “I got off easy just losing money”. It’s all too easy to fall for people who are bad for you. Fortunately The Fucking Cops, or at least these Fucking Cops, are good for you. Get some.
