As to why you should bother taking a good look at ‘Take A Good Look’: if you’ve a thing for catchy, poppy indie rock you may find this will appeal to you. The chorus features some effective hooks, evoking a warm but bittersweet sensation, and there are some occasional mathy moments to its guitar/bass picking that give it away as a fundamentally modern rock composition. Lyrically it’s an oblique broken-heart song of the ‘can’t go it alone’ type; it expresses a sense of struggle but the ambiguity renders it a little unclear, which I guess is advantageous in terms of universality but at the same time the lack of specificity robs it of some personal impact.
Sorry, I’m amusing myself by using unnecessary words: that’s the nature of one-song reviews. It’s a bit hard to draw any real conclusions from just one track! All told ‘Take a Good Look’ is a decent tune that’s competent and likeable, which I’d say is enough reason to give it a listen.
