Del.icio.us links for March 17th through March 18th:

  • BBC NEWS | Finn creates USB ‘finger drive’ – “A Finnish computer programmer who lost one of his fingers in a motorcycle accident has made himself a prosthetic replacement with a USB drive attached.” The cyborgs are coming! The machines rise!
  • Will Michael Jackson pay off debts with O2 gigs? – “Just how many shows would Michael Jackson have to play at the O2 to pay off his considerable debts?” Fun little flash toy that lets you tinker with various settings.
  • David Mitchell on the public sector and online feedback – There are many perfectly reasonable remarks put online, and others that are only bland or harmlessly nonsensical, but if there’s one thing the internet demonstrates it’s that a lot of angry people can read. Their writing, on the other hand, needs work.
  • Fear of youth is worse than ever, says says psychologist and TV presenter Tanya Byron – Adults are suffering from ephebiphobia – fear of young people – says psychologist and TV presenter Tanya Byron, and it is destroying a generation’s chances
  • Record shop of horrors: Selectadisc closes – Music Week suggests there are now 305 indie stores left in the UK, which is better than I’d have guessed at, but a quarter down on the number last year.
  • Newspapers and Thinking the Unthinkable « Clay Shirky – When reality is labeled unthinkable, it creates a kind of sickness in an industry. Leadership becomes faith-based, while employees who have the temerity to suggest that what seems to be happening is in fact happening are herded into Innovation Departments, where they can be ignored en masse. This shunting aside of the realists in favor of the fabulists has different effects on different industries at different times. One of the effects on the newspapers is that many of their most passionate defenders are unable, even now, to plan for a world in which the industry they knew is visibly going away.
