Del.icio.us links for March 13th through March 16th:

  • Paraplegic Man Suffers Spider Bite, Walks Again – He has been confined to a wheelchair for 20 years. Now a paraplegic man is walking again, and his doctors call it a miracle. CBS13 went to Manteca to find out how a spider bite helped get him back on his feet.
  • Zero Hedge: How The World Almost Came To An End At 2PM On September 18 – “On Thursday (Sept 18), at 11am the Federal Reserve noticed a tremendous draw-down of money market accounts in the U.S., to the tune of $550 billion was being drawn out in the matter of an hour or two.” Anyone know more about this? I can’t find more information than what’s in the linked post.
  • The Untold Story of the World’s Biggest Diamond Heist – They were accused of breaking into a vault two floors beneath the Antwerp Diamond Center and making off with at least $100 million worth of loose diamonds, gold, jewelry, and other spoils. The vault was thought to be impenetrable. It was protected by 10 layers of security, including infrared heat detectors, Doppler radar, a magnetic field, a seismic sensor, and a lock with 100 million possible combinations. The robbery was called the heist of the century, and even now the police can’t explain exactly how it was done.
  • The Dead Weather – “Jack White of White Stripes and The Raconteurs has formed a new band with Alison Mosshart of The Kills and Discount. According to the Billboard report, the group also features Raconteurs bassist Jack Lawrence and Queens of the Stone Age guitarist Dean Fertita. The band is called The Dead Weather and they will be releasing their debut this year.” They are boring and it’s depressing to think that this is Alison from Discount. :(
  • Raped and killed for being a lesbian: South Africa ignores ‘corrective’ attacks – Human rights and equality campaigners are hoping that the public outrage and disgust at Simelane’s death and the July trial of the three men accused of her rape and murder will help put an end to the spiralling violence increasingly faced by lesbian women across South Africa.
  • Z Blogs: Individualism, Social Anarchism and Leninism – “I believe there is, as Murray Bookchin said, an “unbridgeable chasm” between social anarchism and individualist or “lifestylist” forms of anarchism. Ideas often thought characteristic of anarchism, such as anti-organizational bias or an obsession for “consensus decision-making” are in fact features of individualist anarchism, not social anarchism.” Excellent primer on the differences between the two chief strands of anarchist theory, with a focus on social anarchism (libertarian socialism).
