Del.icio.us links for February 6th through February 9th:

  • Jews sans frontieres: A primer on Israeli elections – “As many have said, including me, the difference between Right and Left in Israel has nothing to do with the usual meaning of the terms. Both the Right and the Left are racist and Jewish supremacist. Both support the worst human rights abuse and both show absolutely no interest in peace or compromise. But that does not mean Israeli politics don’t matter. To understand what is really in play we need to have a picture of the Israeli electorate.”
  • Barbaric Document: State repression update – The new Counter Terrorism Act will come into force on 16th February. It contains an amendment to Section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000. This amendment will make it an offence, punishable by up to ten years imprisonment, to publish or elicit information about any police constable “of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism”.
Furthermore, Schedule 7 of the Bill applies this amendment to internet service providers and web hosting services. This means they will have a legal duty to remove all sites perceived to fall under this offence, and has provisions for use at home and abroad.
It is unclear what information will be classed as “useful” to terrorists, but due to this ambiguous wording, the Bill has implications for bloggers, journalists, photographers, activists and anyone who values freedom of speech.
  • MMR doctor Andrew Wakefield fixed data on autism – “The doctor who sparked the scare over the safety of the MMR vaccine for children changed and misreported results in his research, creating the appearance of a possible link with autism, a Sunday Times investigation has found.” The war on bad science continues…
  • Atmospheric Black Metal Kitchen: Heavy Metal Laundry Tips – “A friend of mine, a true headbanger of triumphant steel and fellow traveller on the quest of destiny through the vale of evermore (we shall call him “Tim”), once asked me, “Scott, how do you get your metal shirts to stay so black?”
