Del.icio.us links for February 4th through February 5th:
- Exposing myths of segregated Britain|7Feb09|Socialist Worker – “The popular perception that parts of Britain are becoming “ethnic no-go areas” is based on a misreading of the facts, population expert Ludi Simpson tells Anindya Bhattacharyya.” An excellent article that destroys various common myths about immigration, ethnicity and integration/segregation in Britain.
- Danny Bradbury investigates the cyberattack on Kyrgyzstan | Technology | The Guardian – “As the still-nascent cyberwarfare concept emerges, overt battles on the ground are becoming inextricably linked to an often more covert battle of ideologies that play out in the electronic realm. It’s tempting to think of this in the same way that we thought of the cold war: another battle in which proxy wars and black ops were used to promote conflicting ideas.”
- The Best Flash Movie Ever Made Video by Alex – MySpace Video – Genius Flash animation based on classic LP covers.
- Internet Spaceships Super Drama | Rock, Paper, Shotgun – “In what is probably the biggest backstab in Eve Online’s rather stabby history, a director of one of the key corporations in key PvP alliance Band Of Brothers has turned out to be an agent of their biggest enemies, the Something Awful spawned GoonSwarm. The consequence of this is some huge in-game material losses, but also the disbanding of the alliance itself.”
- brokeNCYDE!!! [New Layout/Photos/Song] on MySpace Music – Link saved for the purpose of reminding me about a group that “sum up everything contemptible about cod-alternative fauxmo ‘ironic’ pop music”.
- Sarah Haskins in Target Women: Super Special // Current – A 50-minute special of Sarah Haskin’s excellent series of Target Women episodes, lampooning the way in which the media presents images of “perfect women”.
- Punknews.org | About Attack! Attack! UK – EP stream of South Wales punk darlings.
- To a Delightful Weekend in the Country: the New Generation of British SF | Blasphemous Geometries | Futurismic – “This month in Blasphemous Geometries, Jonathan McCalmont takes a look at the new generation of British science fiction writers.” Further exploration of his concept of “barleypunk”.
- Cheaper to give away Kindles than print the New York Times | Blog | Futurismic – According to an analysis by Silicon Alley Insider, it actually costs the financially struggling New York Times Company about twice as much money to print and deliver the newspaper over a year as it would cost to send each of its subscribers a brand new Amazon Kindle instead. And an inside source tells them their estimate of the Times’s printing costs is so low it’s “not even in the ballpark.”
- Daniel Raven’s Corporate HQ – My friend Daniel Raven has put together a website that’s straight out of 1997. Fortunately, he’s an excellent writer and has put his story Continuity online. Have a read!
